Gumush is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Akhta (Hrazdan) district, and currently in the Kotayk province. The provincial centre is located 16 km to the southwest of the town of Akhta (Hrazdan), adjacent to the Zangi River, near the Alapars village, at a height of 1,480 m above sea level. It was marked in “The Iravan Province Review Book”, and on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
The village was inhabited by 48 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 295 in 1873, 311 in 1886 and 796 Azerbaijanis in 1914. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were massacred or expelled by Armenian armed forces. Armenians were settled in the village.
The village was named Gumush (Silver) due to silver and ore deposits in the area.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 April 1991, the village was renamed “Karenis”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Kotayk province.
