Babakishi is a village in the Novo-Bayazid uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Akhta (Hrazdan) district, and currently in the Kotayk province. The provincial centre lies 11 km to the northwest of the Hrazdan town, by the Miskhana River and at a height of 1,750 m above sea level.
Armenians were deported there from the Alashkirt province of Türkiye in 1829. The village was inhabited by 11 Azerbaijanis in. In 1905-1906 the Azerbaijanis were ousted from the village where Armenians were settled. Along with the Armenians, the village was inhabited by three Azerbaijanis in 1926. In 1930 the three Azerbaijani inhabitants of the village were also driven out. Presently, only Armenians live in the village.
The toponym was formed on the basis of a male name “Babakishi”. It is an anthropotoponym.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 15 July 1948, the village was renamed “Aghavnadzor”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Kotayk province.
