Garamammad is a village in the Shorayel area of the Kars uezd of the former Kars province, later in the former Amasiya (Aghbaba) district, in the present territory of the Shirak province. The provincial centre lies 14 km to the northwest of the town of Gumru, at a height of 1,750 m above sea level. It was marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.
Armenians were settled in the village following the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–1878. In 1897 the village was inhabited by 20 Azerbaijanis and 437 Armenians. The Azerbaijanis were deported from their historical lands by Armenian armed forces in 1919.
The toponym was coined on the basis of the personal name “Garamammad”. It is an anthropo-toponym.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 26 April 1946, the village was renamed “Meghrashad”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of the Shirak province.
