Keshishkend

Keshishkend is a village in the Alexandropol uezd of the former Iravan governorate, later in the former Abaran district, and currently in the Aragatsotn province. The village was integrated into the former Alagoz (Aragats) district in 1972. It lies 15 km to the south of Alagoz (Aragats) settlement.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “kend” (a village) and the ancient Turkic word “kechish/keshish” meaning “a passage, ferry, bridge” (the substitution of “ch ~ sh” is typical for the Azerbaijani language), and means “a passage, village near the ferry.” It is a complex toponym formed on the basis of a relief.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 3 January 1935, the village was renamed “Gekharot”. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative territory of Aragatsotn province.
