Gomaran is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. It is located 2 km to the northwest of the Gudgum (Geghanush) village, on the right bank of the Okhchu River, at a height of 1,000 m above sea level. It is marked on the five-verst map of the Caucasus. Following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921, the settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia.
The village was inhabited by 169 Azerbaijanis in 1897 and 158 in 1914. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported by Armenian armed forces. Following the establishment of Soviet power in the territory of present-day Armenia in 1922–1924, the villagers managed to return to their homes. The village was inhabited by 52 Azerbaijanis in 1926, 68 in 1931, 91 in 1939, 97 in 1959, 183 in 1970 and 163 Azerbaijanis in 1979. The residents of the village were completely expelled from their historical and ethnic lands by the Armenian government in November 1988. At present, Armenians reside there.
The toponym was formed by adding the suffix “-an” to the ethnonym “Komar” (kumar), a branch of the Turkic Seljuk tribe, meaning “a village, place of residence of the Komars”.
According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
