Chobanli

Chobanli is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 15 km to the northeast of the town of Gapan. The settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia after the Zangezur uezd had been established in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921.

The village was inhabited by 16 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 195 in 1873, 96 in 1886, 152 in 1897, 130 in 1904 and 156 Azerbaijanis in 1914. In 1918 the Azerbaijanis were deported having been exposed to massacre by Armenian armed units. Those who left the village managed to return to their homes after the establishment of Soviet power in the present-day Armenian territory. The village was inhabited by 42 Azerbaijanis in 1926 and 49 Azerbaijanis in 1931. Later on, the village was merged with the village of Norshenik of the Gafan district. In 1988 there were 18 Azerbaijani families in the village. In late November 1988 the Azerbaijanis were deported by the state of Armenia. The toponym was coined on the basis of the Oghuz’ ethnonym “Chapanlu” (authors: çobanlı).

According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
