Avsharli was a village in the territory of the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and present-day Syunik province. It was located at a distance of 17 km from Gafan, on the bank of the Okhchu River and in a mountainous area. Another name for the village is “Afsarli”.
The village was inhabited by 92 Azerbaijanis in 1897, 76 in 1926 and 101 Azerbaijanis in 1959. The village was abolished in 1960.
The toponym was coined by adding the identifying suffix “-li” to the Turkic tribal name “Avshar” (Avsar) (a sound alternation “sh~s is typical for the Azerbaijani language) and denotes a place belonging to the “Avshar tribe”.
