Almalig

Almalig was a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Gafan district, and currently in the Syunik province.

The village was inhabited by 81 Azerbaijanis in 1897 and 465 Azerbaijanis in 1914. The Azerbaijanis were massacred or deported by Armenians in 1916–1918, and the village had been in ruins until 1926. After the establishment of Soviet power in present-day Armenia, the village inhabitants managed to return to their homes. The village was inhabited by 49 Azerbaijanis in 1926 and 61 Azerbaijanis in 1931. In mid 1930s the village was abolished. At present, the village lies in ruins.

The toponym was coined by adding the Azerbaijani locative suffix “-liq” to the word “alma”.
