Derebas

Derebas is a village in the Zangezur uezd of the former Yelizavetpol (Ganja) governorate, later in the former Garakilsa (Sisian) district, and currently in the Syunik province. The provincial centre lies 107 km to the northwest of the town of Gafan, at a height of 1,500 m above sea level. The settlement was integrated into the administrative area of Armenia following the establishment of the Zangezur uezd in Soviet Armenia on 31 August 1921. It was marked as “Darabaz” on the five-verst map of the Caucasus.

The village was inhabited by 164 Azerbaijanis in 1831, 515 in 1873, 553 in 1886, 730 in 1897 and 440 Azerbaijanis in 1908. The Armenians were settled in the village in 1828–1829 having been removed from Türkiye. In 1918–1920 the Azerbaijanis were massacred or driven out fromt heir historical-ethnic territories by Armenian armed units. At present, Armenians live in the village.

The toponym was coined by combining the word “dere” denoting in Azerbaijani “a canyon between two mountains” and the word “bash” in Turkic languages meaning “the top of the mountain”, “a peak”.

The village was renamed “Darbas” by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated 10 September 1946. According to the law “On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia” dated 7 November 1995, it was integrated into the administrative area of the Syunik province.
